Purpose
1. This will help you to explain your own personal and professional experience of a future transition
2. You will also understand how this Transition Framework might also be considered when working with clients.
Task
Reflect on and describe your transition from student to practitioner. Think about:
What the transition means for you, your life, and your routines?
Is the change likely to impact on your family or friends? What is troubling or challenging about the transition? What is positive about the transition? Do you have stressors in your life? What personality strengths and weakness to you bring to the transition?
What supports do you have? How can you use these supports to help you with your transition? Do you need more support - if so, what actions mig take to go about accessing these?
Purpose
1. This will help you understand more about the importance of cultural competence practice.
2. You will also provide a reflection on ethical issues in this type of practice.
Task
Drawing from what you learnt in your reading of Xue et al reflect on the first sentence in the conclusion:
"When prognosis is poor or uncertain, there is no simple yes/no answer to the question of whether or not to fully disclose the truth to cancer patients':
Answer the following questions:
• Do you believe it is right, or wrong to tell patients the truth it these situations?
• Who should make the final decision about whether to tell patients the truth - the Doctor or the patient's family?
• In what way do your own worldview, beliefs, values, ethics, upbringing, experiences, education and more, influence your answer to these questions?
What coping strategies can you put in place to help you reduce and manage stress?
Write your thoughts and answers to some of these questions in the Discussion Board.
Also provide a response to some Discussion Forum posts from other students too.
Feedback
Your facilitator will respond and provide feedback to some of the discussion forum posts. You are also encouraged to also provide feedback and comments to each other as well.
Assessment
Remember that your first assessment is due very soon. For this assessment you are required to submit a 1000 to 1200 word written evaluation of Schlossberg's transition framework.
Make sure you understand this week's content well, and that you read the readings, and watched the videos. The learnings obtained in this week's material provide you with the crucial foundation you will need to complete your first assessment. (Although not required in the written assessment, do think about your learnings from last week. What does Schlossberg's framework have to say about being a person of integrity? When you read about Schlossberg's 4Ss is there relevance to e.g., character strengths and/or moral courage being an aspect
'self'. Does this matter? And if it does matter why?).
Purpose. This will help you understand more about the importanceof reflective practice.2. You will also provide a personal example using the Gibbs'Reflective Cycle.
Task
To complete this task:
• Think about a recent event on placement or from practice where the outcome was unsuccessful or when there was an important consequence.
• Using the Gibbs' reflective cycle as a prompt move around the circle to help you learn from this experience.
• In the Discussion Forum write some of your thoughts on your responses to the questions in the cycle.
Throughout your placement or your work in community services it can be very useful to keep a reflective diary, where you use Gibbs' model to reflect on events that surprise, confuse or disturb you. Responding to the questions posed in the cycle will help you engage in reflection. It is only by regularly (daily) reflecting on incidents and events such as these that you can learn to be a better, more ethical and effective practitioner.
