Assignment:
We are taking an in-depth look at Congress. Review pages 392-393 in the textbook to ensure you understand the descriptive representation concept. Then, review The Guardian's interactive page on descriptive representation in the 2018 U.S. Congress (unfortunately, they didn't update it so we could see the current Congress). Nonetheless, this is pretty recent data and gives you a clear idea of the types of people elected to Congress. Finally, choose one of the two attached, peer-reviewed articles to read.
1. "Change in Women's Descriptive Representation and the Belief in Women's Ability to Govern: A Virtuous Cycle Download Change in Women's Descriptive Representation and the Belief in Women's Ability to Govern: A Virtuous Cycle" by Amy Alexander, Politics & Gender, December 2012, Vol.8(4), pp.437-464.
2. "Representing Black Interests and Promoting Black Culture: The Importance of African American Descriptive Representation in the U.S. House Download Representing Black Interests and Promoting Black Culture: The Importance of African American Descriptive Representation in the U.S. House" by Andy Baker, and Corey Cook. De Bois Review; Cambridge Vol 2, Issue 2. (Sep 2005): 227-246.
Which article did you read? What did you learn about the effect of descriptive representation from the article? Did anything surprise you? How close does the U.S. democracy come in achieving descriptive representation (pick at least one factor from the Guardian web page to describe)? What are the challenges for democracies in implementing descriptive representation? Can it be implemented in a democratic fashion? How? If not, is it worth the trade offs?
