Company Background

Midwest Health Insurance is a major, nationwide health insurance company with 7.5 million customers and 24,000 employees. They have been in business since 1990.

Recent Developments

• The top story on today's morning news was about an anonymous internal source at Midwest Health Insurance who leaked information about a security breach.

• The company released a statement confirming that a possible data breach occurred within the last two months including social security numbers and personal health information. As many as 200,000 accounts may have been compromised. The company reassures customers they are their primary concern. They are investigating the matter. That is all they can say until they know more, but they intend to have a web page up that will have latest news and resources for customers and will also be communicating via social media.

• In the meantime, the company begins implementing their crisis communications strategic plan. The CEO, Head of Communications, and Chief Counsel hold an emergency conference call and decide that they need to put out a longer statement as soon as possible in the next few hours. They agree that no one should talk to the press in the meantime so they can get as many facts as possible, identify their message, and prepare the CEO.

• Upon news of the possible security breach at Midwest Health Insurance, the Chairman of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee states to press his concern and says his committee may hold hearings on the matter.
