Assignment:

"A lobbyist is an individual who is compensated to communicate directly with any state, legislative or agency official to influence legislative or administrative action on behalf of his or her employer or client"(California Fair Political Practices Commission [FPPC], 2024, para. 4). Lobbyists must remain ethical and transparent. The following items must be implemented to ensure lobbyists remain ethical and transparent.

  • The lobbyist must be truthful, honest, and have integrity. This means that truthful, accurate, and up-to-date information is shared. If misinformation is shared, it is up to the lobbyist to correct the information and ensure the information is corrected.
  • The lobbyist must be current with all laws and regulations and understand how to represent clients.
  • It is imperative that the lobbyist treats everyone with respect and dignity.
  • It is essential that the lobbyist not represent a client on the same issue or a conflicting argument. If there is a known conflict, it must be shared with the client for resolution.
  • Confidentiality must be utilized when working with clients. (FPPC, 2024)

The following steps need to be taken to reduce the power of lobbyists over lawmakers:

  • Ban the ability of lobbyists to fund fundraisers; this would end the ability to receive special favorable treatment.
  • Ban the ability of lawmakers to prioritize special interest concerns; this would allow lobbyists to focus on the public instead of focusing on elevating their careers. (Center for American Progress [CAP], 2017).
