Assignment:
At the top of Research Log 2, state your (sub-)discipline, the current and unresolved issue you selected, and the most recent version of your refined research question. Include, in parentheses, the citation style preferred by your discipline.
EXAMPLE Environmental Studies (Sustainable Food and Agriculture) > Animal Welfare in Factory Farms > "What housing modifications are needed to improve animal welfare in U.S. CAFOs, and to what extent can these modifications be federally regulated?"
Create a seven-column table, which you will use to log information about your five (5) most credible and useful scholarly sources. Details for each column are provided below:
- Search Terms: The key terms used in your search to find the source.
- Publication Context: The source type, genre, and reference citation (in your discipline's preferred citation style).
- Rhetorical Context: The source's exigence, purpose, and target audience.
- Source Summary: A summary of the source content with a focus on its primary claim, discussion, and/or conclusion.
- Source Contribution: The information or perspectives (with key quotes) the source contributes toward your question.
- Research Direction: New research the source inspires (to corroborate information, to answer questions, etc.).
- Search Terms: New key terms you learned from the source that supplement (or replace) existing search terms.
On the final page of your project, respond to the following three reflection questions:
1. Discuss how your initial investigation of the academic conversation helped to improve the arguability and complexity of your preliminary research question, and what steps you took and/or strategies you used to revise and refine that question.
2. Discuss the extent to which the information and perspectives in your sources, when read together, provide a partial or tentative answer to your refined research question, and what information and perspectives are still needed.
3. Discuss what you have learned about the types of genres academics use to discuss the issue, how conventions (structure, language, and reference) differ between genres, and how genre may inform or impact audience and purpose.
