Question
Educating Consumers About Greenwashing
In recent years, ecolabels are increasingly popular among manufacturers and retailers as they help to signal the brand's sustainability credentials. Ecolabels are voluntary and they certify the environmental and/or social performance of a product or service. They are designed to help consumers and organisational buyers easily identify products that meet certain sustainability standards.
However, the proliferation of ecolabels has made it increasingly difficult for consumers to discern if a product is truly sustainable as many ecolabels are unregulated. For example, some ecolabels may have questionable standards or may not be recognised by the industry. In some cases, companies that are certified may continue to engage in unsustainable practices.
Unfortunately, since many consumers do not possess enough knowledge about the implementation of standards and assurance process behind ecolabels, some companies take advantage of consumers' lack of knowledge and engage in ecolabel greenwashing.
In this assignment, propose an educational campaign that SOJAO, a local sustainability brand selling organic bedsheets and home products, can undertake to educate consumers about greenwashing related to the use of ecolabels.
Note: Information about SOJAO may be found by researching online.
