One of the biggest challenges associated with expatriation in certain global companies is the "repatriation problem". There are instances where companies may be hesitant or unable to provide clarity on the next assignment for the employee after the term of the expatriate assignment ends. This may primarily be due to the long-term nature (2-3+ years) of these assignments, thereby preventing companies from making future commitments or guarantees. Unfortunately, this impacts the ability of some career professionals to accept roles outside their home country.
