This implies that the patient''s requirements and preferences are understood and conveyed to the relevant individuals at the right time, and that this information is utilized to guide the administration of safe, appropriate, and successful care (Fulmer et al., 2021).
The system of services and supports offered to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) appears to be stuck in time. Home- and community-based options are quickly replacing the previous system of institutionalized care. Simultaneously, financial restrictions and onerous rules limit the provision of supportive housing for the I/DD population. Similarly, the old medical paradigm of treatment is making way to person-centered living plans that reflect persons with I/DD''s objectives and skills. However, there is no mechanism in place to coordinate and implement those plans in a system currently dominated by fee-for-service providers (Heller, 2019).
