Assessment Task - Major Essay - Implementation of Evidence Based Practice

You will prepare an academic paper that discusses a practical situation in which evidence was used to change a process, procedure or system. Ideally select a situation that relates to your workplace or area of health practice (e.g double-gloving by laboratory staff to prevent cross infection, skin-to-skin contact post delivery to improve birth outcomes, use of hydrotherapy to shorten rehabilitation after joint surgery).

The paper should include:

1. Introduction:
general brief introduction to the topic
aim of the paper
2. Main section:
2a)
· issue to be investigated with PICOT question to be answered
· reasons for the change (provide stats etc that indicate a change is needed e.g. infection rates are high)
· background information (provides context of the organisation or department, who works there, what happens there, which country etc.)
· review of the research literature on your issue (minimum 500 words)
· evidence sources selected (min 2 articles) to inform the change
· conduct an appraisal of the 2 articles using 2 different appraisal tools (from Topic 5)
· make a decision about what change you intend to implement based on the evidence you sourced. Explain your decision

2b)
· describe how you intend to implement and evaluate the change. Include a Model from Topic 6 that is suitable to the context you described in the background section.
· list the key stakeholders and why a stakeholder
· driving forces - resistance and assistance (set out in a force field analysis diagram, then describe the forces)
· outcomes desired - practice/treatment/technology/training/guidelines/policy
· impact on practice, stakeholder and health services management
· recommendations for using evidence -based practice to further change (this is a general summary of why EBP is valuable to the Health Services Manager)
