2) Critically reflect on the environmental and sociological impacts on health outcomes for the Aotearoa New Zealand population.

Background to this assessment

This is the first assessment in the MHS 8.436 Health and Healthcare in the Context of Aoteaora New Zealand. The focus is on the structure of the Aotearoa New Zealand health system and then the environmental and sociological impacts on health outcomes for the Aotearoa New Zealand population. The Health and disability services in New Zealand are delivered by a complex network of organisations and people. Each has their role in working with others across the system to achieve better health for New Zealanders. However, there are health determinants like social, economic, cultural, historical etc. that may relate to the inequitable access to healthcare among some of the NZ population.

Remember to consider the feedback you received from any previous forum submissions or formative assessments when completing this assessment.

Assessment task 1

Task: Provide a Critical Examination of Aotearoa New Zealand Health System Including Primary Secondary and Tertiary Levels of Healthcare. Critically discuss how this system compares with that of your own country (if not from NZ).

Guidelines: Please spend some time to carefully read all of the information provided in this document and in the assessment marking criteria below.

Provide appropriate sub-headings, concise introductions and conclusions to the essay. Undertake a critical analysis of the funding of the overarching health strategy that guide and inform the NZ health care delivery. Provide a brief historical analysis of the changes in the provision of health reforms over the years and compare this with the current Health Care System in NZ, or if you are not from NZ compare this system to that of your own country.

In this task, you are required mainly to show your ability of your foundation of knowledge.

Assessment task 2

Task: Now, critically reflect on the environmental and sociological impacts of NZ healthcare system on health outcomes for the Aotearoa New Zealand population, including sub groups like including Maori, Pacific and middle income families.

Guidelines: Critically discuss the impact of ethnic identity e.g. Maori, Pacific, Asian as a determinant in relation to inequitable access to healthcare. Consider the healthcare services that these populations need access to e.g. GPs, prescription drugs, maternity, dental care etc. in your critical discussion. You can consider the NZ Health Strategy when you examine the determinants of health.

In this task, you are required mainly to show your ability to synthesise knowledge and your application of knowledge.
