Question

Chapter 9 of A History of South Africa focuses on the years of Nelson Mandela's presidency (1994-1999). Thompson concludes at the end of this chapter that "Except for the AIDS pandemic, which was tearing all of Southern Africa apart, the major problems that afflicted South Africa - poverty, crime, the weak economy, and the education mess - were mutually reinforcing and had deep roots in the past. They could not possibly be solved in six years."

1. Do you agree or disagree with this conclusion? Why? Why not? Use concrete examples from the chapter to illustrate your point of view.

2. Is it possible to say that even the AIDS pandemic in South Africa had deep roots in the past if we consider the impact of the migrant labor system on African family life?
