Guidelines for writing and presenting your literature review.

Introduction (approx. 100 words)
Provide a brief outline / signposting to your literature review.
Introduce your topic, concisely describe the
clinical problem / issue and current topic knowledge.
Search strategy and literature review (approx. 200 words)
State the clinical question (and how it was formulated and the type of question identified)
Describe types of databases searched, key words, Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) or Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) Subject Headings terms and search limits
Present a table (in an appendix, not included in the word count) that concisely summarises key characteristics of the research studies retrieved for review. Examples of column headings are author/year, study design, sample/setting, major findings, strengths and limitations based on critical appraisal.
Critical appraisal of literature (approx. 1000 words)
Present a narrative summary of the type of studies reviewed. Synthesize evidence by comparing study findings, highlighting areas of agreement and disagreement, and highlighting exemplary studies.
Future research (approx. 100 words) Present a gap in nursing's understanding.
Using an appropriate framework, such as PICOT or SPIDER. present a research aim.
Conclusion (approx. 100 words)
Provide a brief summary of the main points covered in your literature review.
A well written and thorough literature review will contain synthesis, appraisal and application of the evidence to their own research proposal. A literature review may express opinions about cited research, highlight trends, themes and gaps and seminal/classic studies.
All claims and opinions should be supported by available evidence.
Your literature review needs to justify a proposed study or next phase of research. Your review should consist mainly of primary sources and be written in an essay format.
Formatting
APA 7 essay format is to be applied to the structure of the essay.
An APA-compliant title page must be attached to the front of your assessment. It must contain the running head, subject code and title, the title of your assessment task, your student number, to whom the assessment task is to be submitted to i.e. subject coordinator, the due date of the assessment task, the word limit and your actual word count (excluding tables, reference list and appendices).
