Immigration Issue in United States
Immigration in the United States is legal and illegal and is highly associated with low skilled workers who are employed at low costs. The article "The Worker Next Door" by Barry Chiswick presents an excellent argument about migration. According to this article, the author argues that the growth of America's economy does not have to depend on the immigrants, be they aliens or legal immigrants that get to America. The author argues that America does not have to depend on low-skilled workers for things to get done (Chiswick, 2006). To support his argument, Barry says, "But if low skilled foreign workers were not here, would lettuce not be picked, groceries not begged, hotel sheets not changed and would restaurants use disposable utensils."
in his argument, the author of the article argues that the states in which immigrants are less concentrated things still get done. In his case, he says that the few cities such as California, New York, Florida, and others are the ones that are highly concentrated with immigrants. This is a small part of America, and therefore, the perception of immigrants should change. The author states that even the areas that have few immigrants, groceries get bagged, hotel sheets get changed, and the grass gets cut. The statement proves that Americans should change the perception of immigrants as low-skilled workers who can get things done.
Barry further states that immigrants and native Americans are able to gain education achievements better than Americans. Their educational results contribute to making business decisions that are necessary for the growth of the economy of the United States (Chiswick, 2006). The increase of immigration in the United States has been profoundly associated with stagnated wages of all workers and therefore resulting in poor living standards and in turn affecting the economy of the United States. The article presents a good argument and helps in changing the perception of immigrants as low skilled workers and hence should be viewed as factors to economy growth.
