1. Imagine if a criminal's gain counts as a benefit that offset's the victim's loss. Then, my gain of stealing $500 from you precisely offsets your loss of $500. Hence, there is no social benefit or social loss ($500 - $500 = $0). So, given this imaginary situation, what is the objection to crime? How can crime impose more costs than benefits (what additional costs are there)?
