Essay Assignment -

Through their subject matter, "The Emperor of Ice Cream" by Wallace Stevens and "To Autumn" by John Keats illustrate two different visions of poetry's subject matter.

By examining the poems' themes and formal elements of the two poems (diction/tone; figurative language including imagery, metaphor, simile; time and setting; speakers/addressee; symbolism, etc.) explain how each poem illustrates the poets' beliefs about poetry's subject matter and, through contrast, explain the significance of the difference.

Your essay should include the following:

A title (please writes your own title; do not repeat the essay question).
An introductory paragraph including the titles of the short stories in quotation marks and names of the authors of the poems you are writing about; a summary of each poem DOES NOT EXCEED 4 or 5 SENTENCES; Your summary should explain the subject matter and main themes of the poems and should offer one or two sentences which describe the main highlights of the poem's formal elements; a thesis statement which incorporates the bolded words in the essay question.
three body paragraphs with - Topic sentences and Evidence in the form of reasons, examples, and quotations with explanations showing how these quotes support the claim in your paragraph.
A Concluding paragraph which re-states your thesis and main points and offers some further comments on the significance of the comparison/contrast.
A Works Cited pages, correctly formatted according to the MLA style.
