The Opinion in “United States of America v. Hughes Aircraft Co., Inc.” (P. 366) illustrates the doctrine of “respondeat superior” (“let the master respond”) under which a corporation is held liable for the wrongful acts committed by its employees while acting within the course and scope of their employment. Hughes argued among other things that it could not be liable if the employees who committed the illegal acts were never convicted (LaRue was acquitted and no other employees were indicted). Explain why the Court rejected Hughes’ argument and provide your opinion as to whether you believe the result in this case was fair.
