Problem: Like all children, my daughter Kendyl went through various toy obsessions growing up. At one point she was obsessed with barbie dolls, later she was obsessed with American Girl dolls, and after that she became obsessed with the next fad--collecting Beanie Babies. This is a sequence over development. I discussed the important thngs that sequences teach us about development and the different types of sequences that can be recognized in development. Using the sequence above: Explain whether this sequence is an arbitrary or an invariant sequence as defined in class. Defend this choice persuasively by appealing to how these two distinct types of sequences are defined. In class, I discussed how important it is to explore continuity over time in development. I made a distinction between surface and deep continuity. Allow yourselves to specualte a bit on my daughter's psychology and use the sequence above to illustrate the surface and the presumed deep continuity she is displaying across her transition from Barbies to American Girls to Beanie Babies. Describe the surface and then the deep continuity as you see it in a way that makes it clear to me that you understand the distinction.
