Game Analysis Video
The purpose of this assignment is to analyse an existing game through the lens of two topics covered in IGB180. This assignment is designed to encourage you to view a game critically in terms of the impact it might have on players and to express yourself verbally with a visual aid. These skills will help you throughout your time at university and further into your career, when you will need to express your opinions or justify a design, art, programming, production or administrative decision. The video should be 5 to 6 minutes long.
You can choose TWO topics to act as lenses for your game analysis from any of the weekly IGB180 lecture topics except for week 1 (Introduction). You can therefore choose from:
• Violence in Games
• Gender and/or Sexuality
• Ethics
• Serious Games
• Ludology/Narratology
• Art
• Psychology
• Culture
• Demographics
• Social aspects
You cannot use the same topic as the one chosen for your Point of View Presentation earlier in semester (e.g., if your point of view presentation was on gender in games your analysis video might analyse an existing game in terms of its violence and or its educational benefits).
You will be required to make 2 to 3 distinct points for each topic (4 to 6 total) and will be marked on how you apply the topic as a lens for analysing your chosen game, so be sure to select a topic with sufficient relevance to the game that also dissects or highlights it in interesting ways. For example, applying theory from Ludology to a game that categorises its types of play or narrative may not be especially interesting or insightful unless it also helps to expose what makes the game unique or impactful.
The focus of this piece of work is to analyse an existing game based on the understanding you have developed in the unit. You may choose to base your analysis on content presented in the unit, but you are encouraged to extend your analysis to include the readings for the lecture topic as well as other relevant sources.
The game you choose to analyse must be able to be read about online. You will be required to provide a link to information on the game so that those unfamiliar with the game can find out about it. You will be assessed based on the quality of your analysis and not the production quality of the final video. For example, you will not be assessed on the standard of your voiceover skills, but you will be assessed on the clarity and depth of your analysis. That said, it is essential visuals and audio are clear and easily understood.
CONTENT: Your video should analyse your chosen game through the lens of two of the available topics (see above). You should aim to spend 2 to 2½ minutes discussing the game from the point of view of each topic. For each topic you should aim to make 2 or 3 distinct points (for a total of 4 to 6 points). Each point should be clearly articulated and described. It is important that you communicate the issue as well as how it applies in your chosen game (for example if your topic is violence in games, and your chosen game is Super Mario Brothers you might talk about how realism can influence the likely impact of violence in a game and then talk about the degree of realism shown in the game (with images from the game)).
REQUIREMENTS:
Title The start of your video should include your name and student number as well as the name of the game you are analysing and the two topics chosen as lenses. This slide
should be visible for at least the first few seconds of your video as a reference for your marker.
Introduction (30-60 seconds) The introduction should include the name of the game, a brief description of the game (e.g., "Super Mario Brothers is a platformer released by Nintendo in which the player controls a character called Mario on a quest to rescue a princess") and identify the two topics you will be using as lenses through which to analyse the game.
Analysis (4- 5 ½ minutes) You should aim to deal with your two chosen topics separately (that is, present the 2-3 points for the first topic and then the 2-3 points for the second topic).
For each topic, you should provide a structured, logical analysis of the game that draws on a deep understanding of the topic and sophisticated analysis of the game. It is important that your presentation integrates your knowledge of the topic as well as the game. For example, talking about the way realism influences the impact of violence in games on the player shows knowledge of the topic, but a statement such as "and this can be seen in the game" fails to show the required level of analysis of the game. Rather, you might describe the ways in which the game depicts low levels of realism (e.g., "the player most often defeats enemies in the game by jumping on them" "none of the characters in the game are depicted as bleeding or dying, instead they fall off the bottom of the screen") and how this in turn creates a game in which the violence is unlikely to have a strong impact on the player in terms of real life aggression.
Slides should include minimal text, and may include images or video from games to support your point, but remember to ensure these items support or illustrate the point you are trying to make.
Remember that you cannot use the same topics as you chose for your point of view presentation. In reapplying the lenses to your chosen game you should aim to go beyond what was discussed in class in order to demonstrate your understanding of the issue/s.
Conclusion (15-30
seconds) Your conclusion can be reasonably brief and might present any final thoughts you have regarding the game (from the point of view of the two topics). Given time constraints it is not necessary to summarise all your points as part of the conclusion.
