Assignment:
Green Goddess Ltd. (GG) is a chair manufacturing company located in Toronto. The administrative side of the business (sales, purchasing, receivables) is not unionized, but the manufacturing plant is. Maria is the new HR manager handling both areas.
Cindi works in the sales office inputting sales into the production scheduler. She's been with GG 5 years. It's an important role because the production scheduler manager helps plan the manufacturing schedule, supplies required, and the employees needed. If the figures aren't correct, there can be financial consequences for GG. Over the past several months Joe, the production scheduler manager, has noticed that Cindi is distracted, and he's caught a few minor errors. He thought she had a couple of bad days. Everyone has them. Today though Cindi made a huge error that potentially could have put the company at financial risk. She inputted the sales by season, not by type. Joe only noticed it when he was reviewing the supply figures and noticed a huge increase in materials to be ordered. Joe would like to fire Cindi immediately. He has scheduled a meeting with Maria.
1. How do you think Maria will respond to Joe's request to terminate Cindi? What advice will she give him?
2. If Cindi is fired and sues for wrongful dismissal will the company win? Why or why not? Explain.
3. If Cindi had been employed on the unionized side of the company, what would Maria's advice to Joe have been? What other considerations are there? Explain.
