Scenario:

In this unit, we read "A Doll's House and The Glass Menagerie". The audience learns a lot about the characters. For this paper, you are going to assume the identity of a marriage counselor. Two characters from the plays are going to come to you for advice on whether they should remain married or not. Assume that the two characters have been married for two years. Given what you learn about the characters by reading the plays and what you can infer about them, advise the characters whether you think they should continue to work on their marriage or to get a divorce. The couples you can choose from are:

Assignment Restrictions:

You need to set your characters in the present day, 2020, which means that some of these characters who hold values from the times the plays were set in (A Doll's House in 1879 and The Glass Menagerie in the late 1930s) may have a hard time dealing with how modern relationships are. You will need to fully analyze each character separately, then discuss how the two would either be able to have a successful marriage or a difficult marriage. Use terminology from this unit's chapters to clarify aspects of your discussion.
• Length: 4 pages minimum. Cannot exceed 10 pages. This does not include your works cited page.
• Format: MLA (appearance and citation). When you use outside sources (the plays) you must document those sources in MLA style (parenthetical citation and a works cited - this is covered in Chapter 3 and course materials).
• Do not use outside research in this paper - however, you must include at least four quotes from the play or plays.
• The audience for the paper is an academic audience. Academic audiences expect very few (if any) sentence level errors and a professional, formal tone.
