Assignment Details
Please choose ONE concept from either Module 3 or Module 4 chapters.
The other 40% of your paper is discussing why it is beneficial for your future to know this information. Please be specific. If it will help in a specific career, what career, and why. If it will help you as a parent, or an aunt/uncle, why. In what specific ways is your life going to be easier because you know this information.
The last 20% is to properly reference your source using APA format. In this second reflection paper, you CANNOT cite the textbook. I want you to find a peer reviewed source on the topic, and use that to discuss the topic. Bring something NEW to the table that we haven't talked about, use this as an opportunity to learn something.
To properly cite a source, remember that every source must have BOTH an in-text citation as well as a full citation in your reference page. If you need more details about how to cite using APA, check out the Modules tab. There are links to the library that can help you figure it out.
This is the one of the concept from my modules: Erikson's Theory of Generativity vs. Stagnation
In adolescence, social life is focused on establishing an identity, and an identity is crucial to the formation of intimate relationships in middle adulthood. Here, Erikson's psychosocial stage of development is generativity vs. stagnation, which is contingent on the formation of an intimate relationship.
Generativity
• Generativity is defined as the desire to generate, or produce.
o The desire for generativity stems from the idea that people need to have children to leave a legacy and have a purpose.
o This idea is outdated, and was even during Erikson's time; however, his theory has the same basic premise, but expands upon it.
o Erikson believed that humans do have an innate desire to leave a legacy, and to train and improve the next generation. This can be done by having children, by nurturing them, and by teaching them.
o That said, the desire for generativity can be achieved in many different ways.
- You can improve the world by diving passionately into work, as long as your work feels meaningful and important. You can help the next generation by investing in important clubs or culturally important infrastructure.
Stagnation
• The potential risk to not developing generativity is clear: those lacking generativity run the risk of being without purpose or without passion.
• Erikson believed people not experiencing generativity would eventually turn to extravagance; basically, treating themselves as their only child. You want that motor boat, get that motor boat. Unfortunately, such self-centred behaviour cannot fill what is missing-meaning.
• An important note is that Erikson didn't think people would automatically fulfil generativity by having children. Simply having children is not enough, parents need to put energy into raising and nurturing them.
