Assignment:

For example, Escherichia, Salmonella, and Shigella were formerly three separate genera but are now suggested to be one genera. - They really are closely related, even by biochemical standards. - However, this has lead to a divide within the microbiological community. While genetic identification may seem straightforward, prokaryotes are known to pick up genetic material from outside sources - the environment, other microbes, etc. - not just their parent cell.

Question: How should prokaryotic diversity be handled

Should microbes just use the classical biochemical approach to identifying organisms? Maybe all of the organisms should be reclassified based on genetic information?
