It is true that labels are widely used in schools when it comes to identifying students with learning difficulties or behavioral issues. The reason that labels are used for such cases is to mainly put these students in to specific categories and then offer them help according to their needs. So, if students with learning difficulties or other issues exist, labeling cannot stop. However, this labeling must be known only to the parents and the educator who is teaching the child, or other professionals who treat him or her. Confidentiality is crucial in avoiding labeling these children in the eyes of other students or members of the school community. Also, labeling the students in an obvious not discreet way can make them feel helpless, and lower their self-esteem. This learned helplessness will lower their expectations and will to succeed in school and beyond. On the other hand, labelling of students for other reasons such as racial, religious, economical, or social, is unacceptable and teachers must be aware of the consequences of such actions.
