Identifying poor design is an important skill, but mere recognition is not enough. Once a design flaw is identified, you have to either fix it or delete it. Not only is there nothing wrong with deleting flawed design elements, creative deletion is actually one of the most important skills a designer can learn. It is particularly important to be able to edit your own work. Look for elements that either detract from or fail to support the publication's message...it should be changed or deleted in favour of a constructive design element or more white space.
