Critical Analysis and Learning
Assignment - Critique ONE article from the course that you plan to use as existing knowledge for your proposal.
Article - Art education through the sustainable design of learning spaces by ANA MARÍA MARQUÉS IBÁÑEZ
(In preparation, you will need to read, understand, and have thoughts about the whole article, but skimming where necessary and paying attention to what you need for the assignment. Consult the handout "how to summarize entire articles")
400-500 words
First paragraph is a short summary with a few tweaks (highlighted)
Approx 200 words
Introduction of the author(s) family name/last name only, date of the article (year only, in brackets), and title of article (in quotation marks) combined with the author's main topics and claim (the nutshellJ)
Existing knowledge (generalized statement about what the authors say other authors have said and/or what is known about the topic to date, what has been focused on previously)
This needs to be extremely short. One sentence. The focus is on kd and nk this time.
Knowledge deficit (statement about what still needs to be known, gaps in research, harms to populations, problematic or limited methods, new ways to examine things, new questions)
New knowledge (so far we have only worked with the introductions, but now you have tools for readings the rest of the article, so you can now use the whole article and the abstract to enhance the nk information in the intro)
Claim [now you can use the abstract and rest of article]
map of how article proceeds [if this is not found in the introduction, use the rest of the article to create one]
methods [if this is not found in the introduction, use the methods section of the article]
Why new knowledge is important
ADD AS THE LAST SENTENCE: additional knowledge deficits for future researchers (critique-taking a position in relation to the article.)
The second paragraph offers Approx 200-300 words
Identifies additional knowledge deficits by taking a position in relation to the article
Using personal experience and/or interest to apply one, some, or all of the concepts to a specific context
Identifying methods issues or possibilities (number of participants, gender, other demographic information)
Identifying knowledge deficits the authors point to about their own work (see conclusion and discussion sections of article) and adding to these
Use modals and limiting expressions where appropriate in this section...you are writing about possibility....x can, might, may, could......
You will need to add some information from the article to make your points about the knowledge deficits. Make sure you use reporting expressions and in text citation to do that.
Throughout
Contains enough detail to accurately capture the author's claims
Contains useful, appropriate, frequent reporting expressions
Avoids "the author" or "the article," using the author's name and/or pronouns instead
Uses APA
2 authors = both names all the time
3-6 = after you say them all the first time they come up, you can use et al. (and others in Latin) Pennings et al.
More than 6 = you can use et al. the first time they come up
Year only mentioned once per paragraph for APA.
