Discussion 1

Discussion: Topics for research in computer science

Choosing an appropriate topic for your dissertation is your first challenge. In this Discussion, you will share your proposed research topic(s) for feedback from your colleagues.

You have now completed eight modules and many readings during that time. During those modules, you've had the opportunity to discuss a variety of topics that hold potential for conducting research.

Within the discipline of computer science, the challenge is not the lack of potential topics! The challenge you face is choosing a topic that would allow you to develop a research proposal to meet the requirements of the Dissertation.

To prepare for this Discussion:
1. Review the Week 1 Lessons and Learning Resources provided on the nature of research in the computer science discipline and how you might choose a topic on which to conduct further research.

REQUIREMENTS
• Identify a topic (or up to 3 topics, if you have not already chosen a topic while completing your other modules) that you feel would meet the requirements of the Computer Science Dissertation.
• Describe the topic, the aspects of the topic which you would investigate, and what you might learn as a result of the investigation that would add to the academic scholarship of the computer science discipline.
• In your post, also provide 3 characteristics of the research topic that makes it suitable for a master's level research project, one that could be completed within a 10-month timeline.

Discussion 2

Discussion: Reviewing research methods

In this Discussion, you will share and critique each other's' articles from the Week 1 Assignment.
Being able to identify the research methodology and research methods that would be most appropriate for a research topic is a critical skill which is required to begin the research proposal process.
In your Week 1 Assignment, you chose 5 articles to review in support of your proposed research topic. The Discussion this week provides you the opportunity to share the results of your initial literature review and critique the research and research methods that were used in 2 of the articles.

To prepare for this Discussion:
• Review the Week 2 Lessons and Learning Resources
• Refering to the work you completed for the Week 1 Assignment, choose 2 of the 5 articles that you included in your Week 1 Assignment submission. Ensure that the research methodology identified within the articles are ones that would be appropriate for your own choice of research topic submission.

REQUIREMENTS
• Provide a short summary of each of the two articles, describing the research methodology and research method(s) employed in the research.
• Critically evaluate the choices of research methodology and method(s) in terms of the appropriateness in supporting the aims and objectives of the research.
• Include an explanation on how the methodology and method(s) employed in the research might be appropriate for your own research topic.

Discussion 3

Discussion: Problem statements
In this Discussion, you will share and critique each others' problem statements.
Creating a proposal begins with a well-written problem statement. Well-written problem statements are developed through a process of writing, review and revision.
In this Discussion Question, you will post an initial version of your problem statement and engage in a cycle of review, feedback and refinement.

To prepare for this Discussion:
• Review the Week 3 Lessons and Learning Resources
• In particular, review the document ‘Advice on providing constructive peer reviews'provided in the Week 3 Learning Resources.

REQUIREMENTS
• Write the problem statement that introduces your proposed research study. Keep in mind that a problem statement should clearly identify the context for the research and how the context leads to the need for the potential research study.
• In your post, also include an explanation on how the problem statement is supported by your literature review which you began in Week 1. Cite the relevant literature at the end of the problem statement.

Discussion 4

Discussion: IT artefacts
In this Discussion, you will share and critique each others' IT artefacts.
Computer science dissertations require the production of an IT artefact, that can be evaluated through appropriate actions of testing or expert review. Clearly describing the IT artefact and how it will be evaluated often requires several reviews and revisions.
In this Discussion Question, you will post an initial description of your IT artefact that you would develop as part of your research study and how you envision it being evaluated.

To prepare for this Discussion:
• Review the Week 3 Lessons and Learning Resources
• Review the document ‘Advice on providing constructive peer reviews.
By Day 4 (Sunday)
Post: Create an initial post in which you:
• Begin by sharing the Project Aims and Objectives that you developed as part of the Week 3 Assignment.
• Write out a description of your IT artefact that your research study would produce. The description of the IT artefact should clearly identify how the IT artefact will demonstrate that the Project Aims and Objectives would be fulfilled.
• In your post, also include a short explanation on how the IT artefact might be evaluated.
REQUIREMENTS
• Choose two different IT artefacts posted by your colleagues and review them, using the Learning Resource, ‘Advice on Providing Constructive Peer Reviews' as a guide.
• Additionally, respond to feedback you may receive from your colleagues.

Discussion 5

Discussion: Identifying challenges associated with research projects
In this Discussion, you will consider the challenges you may face during your research project.
Every dissertation project is unique, in the sense that the research is original, using methodology and methods to support the research goals and objectives, while the production of the IT artefact and its evaluation represents the outcomes of the research. However, as with any project, there are some common elements that are likely to create challenges.
This week's Discussion is intended to provide you time to consider what aspects of your research study may prove to be problematic and how you could mitigate their impact.

To prepare for this Discussion:
• Review the current version of your research proposal, identifying aspects that might pose challenges during the actual research study.
• Review the Week 5 Lessons and Learning Resources

REQUIREMENTS
• Identify elements of concern which you may have in relation to your intended research project. These can be related to resources; scope; time; and skills necessary to generate surveys, develop questions for interviewees, analyse results from data, or conduct evaluations. They could also involve aspects directly relate to the computer technology you will be using.
• Provide an explanation on how these elements of concern could negatively impact your research study, in terms of delaying completion or disrupting motivation during the research project.
• Describe how you might mitigate the negative impact, by including strategies to offset the impact and positioning these strategies within the overall project planning process.

Discussion 6

Discussion: Ethical challenges with research projects

In this Discussion, you will analyse ethical challenges in research projects.
Every Dissertation project is unique, in the sense that the research presents opportunities to uncover unknown information and connections between contributing factors or influences and, in some cases, to create contexts that require the researcher to consider the ethical implications of the research.
In this Discussion, you are asked to consider your own research proposal while choosing and reading about a case study that presents an ethical challenge to the researcher.

REQUIREMENTS
• Provide a short summary of the ethical challenges, conflicts and risks associated with the research described within your chosen case study.
• Describe, using examples, how the challenges, conflicts and risks identified in the case study were minimised through the researcher's actions.
• Identify how examining this case study has assisted you in increasing your awareness of the potential risks associated with your own proposed research study.

Assignment 1

Individual Assignment: Selecting a topic for your project
While you might want to take even more time to select a topic for your Dissertation proposal, now is the time to make a choice on the area of discipline in which you wish to further study!

• Using the Library database and search function, locate 3 academic journals that contain articles on research conducted on your chosen topic, within the last 5 years.
• From the 3 journals, choose and read 5 articles that provide support for further research on the topic you chose.

Create a 750-word document that includes the following:
1. An opening paragraph introducing the topic and the reasons why you chose the topic.
2. A summary of each of the 5 articles you used that provide support for further research on the topic you chose. Include in the summary information on why the article supports further research. Each summary should be approximately 100 words in length.
3. A concluding paragraph that summarises the need for further research in your chosen topic.

Assignment 2
