Evaluating Credibilty
We have looked at a number of readings and videos over the past couple of weeks. In some cases, you were asked to paraphrase, in others to determine and/or evaluate how the author used pathos and/or logos to support a thesis and/or claim. This week we look at ethos - identifying and evaluating the credibility of the author/speaker.
Choose one of the articles/videos listed below and respond to the following questions:
Question 1. What about the author or speaker makes (or does not make) you trust them? Explain clearly.
Question 2. Consider all the criteria for credibility we discussed in class this week (credentials, eviderice, expert opinion, experience, familiarity, position, bias, delivery, breadth). Which of these support the author's/speaker's credibility and which may detract from it? Explain.
a) Maris Medina - The English language plays a role in dividing cultures
b) Greta Thunberg - Address to the UN Climate Change Summit
c) Jamie O'Meara - Guns, sex, and educatation
d) Ruth Hansen - Students should pay for the privilege of a university education
e) Patricia Ryan - Don't insist on English.
