Using outside sources, research, review, familiarize yourself, and understand the suggested topic below as it relates to project procurement management. Then write a minimum 5-9-page report on the topic.

Identifying and avoiding ethical challenges in project procurement management

Note: Due to their past use in in this class, use of either the Springfield Interchange or Chunnel projects is not permitted. For obvious reasons (I hope), the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is also not an acceptable topic for this final paper.

Re Paper No. 2 - The Final Paper: The list of topics is a suggestion only. Feel free to create your own topic so long as it has something to do with project procurement management, and the instructor has approved it in advance. An obvious choice if you are stumped: Examine successes and failures of project procurement management in high-visibility projects like the Big Dig, Panama Canal expansion, etc. There are plenty of those topics out there.

Guidance on Individual Papers - Writing at a Graduate Level

As you go to write your individual papers, here are a few pointers based on prior classes and my "pet" peeves. Note the emphasis on "graduate." If you know you are rusty or not a great writer, check out the link to the UMGC Effective Writing Center and other writing support under "Course Resources."

> Rule No. 1: Make sure you read the requirements of the assignment and write your paper to fulfill the assignment.
> APA Style: Please try to follow the basics, but I do not expect the "running head" or a Table of Contents for a short paper. Be sure to refer to the sample paper posted under "Course Content."
> Grading Rubric: Please read the Grading Rubric before you start writing in earnest. Keep in mind that I do differentiate between "in class" references (the PMBOK and other readings) and outside references. The online UMUC Library is handy for such research, but Google will also help.
> Page Length: You can go a little longer without incurring a penalty but writing 20 pages (I have had them!) will not enhance your grade. Please save your energy.
> APA Citations: If you are unclear on in-text citation forms, please see pp. 174-177 of the APA Stylebook especially the table on page 177 or one of the APA style shortcuts under "Writing Resources."
> Bullet points are not writing. Use them sparingly as part of your analysis, but not as entire paragraphs (or, as I have seen, for half a paper).
> Figures (pictures, tables, etc.) are not writing either - use them to support your ideas. Also, you need to cite the source of figures that are not your original work.
> Structure: Pay attention to your paper's structure using the APA Stylebook as a guide: introduction, discussion, conclusion, etc. Also know when to start a new paragraph - I still get far too many papers that contain one-page paragraphs.
> Punctuation: Commas, please! If you are not clear on their use, check the APA Stylebook for guidance. And then there are all those other pesky punctuation marks.
