Writing Project: Evaluation Argument

This is a five page evaluation argument essay which will demonstrate your ability to use course content covered to this point. You will be using all material discussed in the first part of the semester: Critical Thinking, Research (abstracts, annotations, documentation, and selection of sources), and Toulmin Argument Model. You will follow MLA format including a works cited page which includes at least four sources, including one print source.

The goal of the project is to support an opinion with reasons and evidence. The Toulmin model of argument should be the pattern you follow, and appeals- logos, pathos, and ethos-should be apparent. You are trying to convince an audience to assent to your claim, and your claim should reflect evaluation and the criteria used in the process. You must consider the intended audience, their preconceived ideas, your claim, your reasons, and the evidence you will use to prove your claim (thesis).

The process includes identifying an issue, formulating a claim, choosing reasons which support the claim, arranging as criteria, gathering evidence, planning the argument, and writing the paper. Since categorical evaluation is the basis of the argument, be sure to suggest the five step pattern, in which reasons become criteria and evidence - discovered in research - is applied.

Identifying an Issue and Formulating a Claim

You should select any issue of your choice and write the paper on a claim which is well thought out. Be open to accepting new ideas during the prewriting and research stages.

Choosing and Arranging reasons

Although there may be several reasons you believe your claim is valid, you should be selective so that you can focus on specific areas of the issue. Three or four reasons (criteria for categorical evaluation) are sufficient to develop an effective essay. The reasons not be all inclusive, but they should be logically organized for coherent presentation.

Gathering Evidence

At this point you will research the topic for evidence. Identify a variety of sources which are reliable and authoritative, juried sources. These should include both print and electronic sources. Consider the discussion on types of evidence: facts, inferences, and judgments. What would be effective for your claim? Gather evidence ensuring that it can be correctly documented in the final paper.
Planning the Argument and Drafting the Paper

In planning the argument, consider the basic writing process: prewriting, planning, drafting, revising, and editing. Prewriting consists of the first four steps and anticipating opposing arguments. Planning should include evaluating and organizing research, anticipating opposing arguments, and outlining. Drafting the paper should include focus, organization, content, and documentation.

Revising and Editing for Publication

Revising should include considerations of organization, content, documentation, and style. Editing considers grammar, mechanics, spelling, and format.

The paper will be evaluated on the basis of your ability to:
· Present a clear, concise evaluation thesis (claim);
· State clear reasons (criteria) for your beliefs;
· Give evidence to support the claim and your reasons;
· Document material correctly, using MLA format;
· Think on your own and incorporate secondary sources;
· Demonstrate a well written essay.
