Public health issue:

1. Public Health Problem: Opioid abuse (diversion) among healthcare providers

• Definition: When prescription medicines are obtained or used illegally, for example, healthcare providers stealing prescription medicines or controlled substances such as opioids for their own use (CDC, 2019)

2. Yale Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Clinic

• In 2020, a nurse employed by Yale Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility clinic removed fentanyl from the vials in the clinic and injected saline into vials so that it would appear as if none of the narcotics were missing.
• Approximately 75 percent of the fentanyl given to patients at the Yale REI clinic from June to October 2020 was adulterated with saline.
• The fentanyl stolen by this nurse was used for surgical procedures and the absence of an anesthetic during an outpatient procedure may lead to serious bodily injury to the patient.

3. This is a public health crisis not only due to the growing opioid epidemic, but also because it is impacting the quality of care that patients receive in healthcare settings.
