Assignment:
Description: Policy makers like our elected legislators are usually not medical, nutrition, or public health, or agricultural professionals. They rely on regular communication from professionals to help guide their policy making decisions. They need to know what we know as those that work in the field. To gain experience in writing a professional policy letter to a Senator, students will write a 1-page paper (formal letter style) identifying a current food policy issue in the food system, acknowledge the Senator's role in the process to improve this policy issue, and make a formal request of action appropriate for a sitting U.S. Senator.
Purpose: To practice professional and meaningful correspondence to a sitting US Senator to request some action to improve a current food policy concern.
Instructions:
• Students will choose a current food policy of interest to write a compelling letter in support of or against a particular issue to a current sitting US Senator of which they are a constituent. To be compelling, you must provide evidence that this topic is important and is in urgent need of their help.
• Professional letters require decorum. For proper decorum, you need to include your knowledge of the senator's voting record, committee assignment, or campaign platform issues to let the senator and their team know you have done your background research.
• Formal letter writing skills must be demonstrated. This includes correct salutations.
• Provide at least 3 reputable, evidence-based references. These references need to have intext citations and be provided at the end of the letter on a reference page in APA format. This is not needed when writing as a professional but is needed for this course. One reference should be from knowledge you collected about the Senator (their webpage, news article, official government websites are acceptable).
