- Reflect on what a person such as yourself can gain when they start becoming more familiar with the sounds of music styles from different cultures.
(Make specific references to this CD and to previous reading assignments.)
OBJECTIVE - Begin to better embrace the range of sounds that make up the musics of the world.
ASSIGNMENTS -
1. Read the overview below.
2. Listen to the CD: Smithsonian Folkways World Music Collection. Read about each song in the accompanying liner notes.
3. Complete Assignment.
OVERVIEW -
It's one thing to read about different cultures. It's quite another thing to actually experience them. The same goes for music. You have read quite a bit about the music of various cultures, but you haven't yet had the opportunity to consider that music in terms of its sound. In this lesson, you get to do just that. In this lesson, you are challenged to immerse yourself in the exotic landscape of world music's.
You probably realize by now-especially from your Nettl reading-that it takes quite an open (and knowledgeable) mind to accept and value the diversity of music's. After all, our tendency as humans is to dislike that which is unfamiliar. Consider: If you and I agree that someone who sings with a pinched (nasally sounding) voice is not singing well, or that it is unpleasant to hear two melodies when they are constantly "out of tune" with each other, why would we bother to listen-let alone like-those sounds when we heard them in someone else's music? Perhaps the only time we wouldn't mind is if: (a) we heard their music knowing that they liked that sound just as we like the sounds we are familiar with; and (b) we had the courage, generosity, and good will to not disparage their tastes because they are different from our own.
Yes, hearing strange music and not being turned off is not necessarily natural. You need a big heart and a curious mind. And you will likely need both to really get into and enjoy the Smithsonian Folkways World Music Collection CD. As you might imagine, every musical work recorded on this CD is an example of musical styles that some people somewhere in the world consider special. As you listen, pay close attention to what is capturing your interest. Perhaps many of the recorded works will. Or perhaps very few will at first. Be patient: your judgment of some of these musical works will likely change as you get to know the pieces and consider the people who cherish them.
Because you will be writing your first Reflection Essay for the submission, let me clarify again what the expectations are for your work. You are being asked to submit a carefully prepared essay that is between two and three double-spaced, typed pages.
