Question

Identify the groups (at least five) you belong to. Then identify whether these groups are primary or secondary, in-group or out-group, or a reference group. Now write the instrumental and expressive functions of each group. There is the adage "it's who you know, not what you know" that still reigns true in our society. Although one's investment in education is tied to better job placement, higher pay, and overall career happiness, sometimes merely the groups to which you belong factors into your success. Review your groups. Are any benefits to you beyond socialization? How can one's group associations be useful in helping you get your foot in the door or get a job (or a better job) once you graduate from college? Is it appropriate to have the upper hand simply because of who you know? Why? Is this practice of nepotism a function of social groups and organizations (functionalism)? Does it reinforce the idea that those who have power will remain in power (conflict theory)? Or does the act of nepotism differ amongst individuals so it genuinely cannot be judged on the macro-level (symbolic interactionist)? Explain which approach you choose and why?
