Assignment - Late Adulthood Discussion
Purpose of the Assignment - The purpose of this research paper is to address an issue that is prominent in early late adulthood. You will need to conduct research on the topic using the book and outside sources. You can use the questions under the topic list as a starter.
Late Adulthood -
Wellbeing in later life -What genetic, personal, cultural, and/or societal factors seem to contribute to longevity? Identify what the activity theory state about older adults. What implications does this theory have about quality of life during late adulthood? What roles do social support and integration, including altruism and volunteering, play to life satisfaction in late adulthood?
Senior housing - What kinds of caring arrangements are available to the elderly today in the US? In other countries? What cultural values are associated in the way that the elderly are cared for? Who seems to adjust to and like each type best? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each living arrangement? Evaluate your community's response to the housing needs of the elderly.
Dementia - Identify the causes and symptoms of severe cognitive impairment in the elderly. How are different disorders distinguished? What is Alzheimer's disease, and what does the latest research suggest about it? What methods are used to treat dementia?
Directions for Writing the Paper - Your research paper must be 4-5 pages (not including title and reference pages) and contain at least the following basic elements:
APA Format: Include a title page, reference page and in-text citations.
Introduction: A quick overview of the topic of your research topic. States the questions you will address in a form of a thesis statement.
Body: Contains an organized discussion of information you gathered to address your research questions and your sources for each of these including the interview. Be sure to refer to our course readings to guide you on determining the most important aspects of your topic that your reader should know about. Summarize your findings and briefly state how these relate to your topic as a whole.
Conclusions/Recommendations: State what conclusions you can draw from all the information you gathered. Along with your critical analysis, state which sources in your literature review you think are most reliable and which are not. Explain your reasons. State what implications you think the information you discussed during your presentation have on adulthood? State what important questions related to your topic remains unanswered.
Research section: The core of your research paper must be a discussion of the information that you have gathered regarding your topic. In addition to the information provided in your Santrock textbook, you must gather materials from other sources (e.g., research journals, newspapers, personal interviews, etc.). While the Internet, including Wikipedia, sometimes pose provocative questions and contain interesting information, you should not rely on it for accuracy.
Be a critical consumer of knowledge. Determine if your source is reliable or not. You need to include at least 10 academic peer reviewed journal articles. Be sure to include recent (within the last ten years) scholarly materials in your references. If you have difficulty finding relevant material, ask me or the librarian.
