Reading for the Question:
Ishmael was the favorite nephew of the chief, Ibrahim. When Ishmael was fifteen, his father died and in the custom of his people, Ibrahim married the wives of his deceased brother. Ishmael was recognized as the eldest son of the third wife of his father. Ibrahim often encouraged Ishmael to make him, the spirit of his father and the people of the village proud of Ishmael.
Ishmael enjoyed the life in the village. Although he missed his father, there were many relatives to spend time with, talk to and from whom Ishmael would receive support and encouragement. People in the village generally agreed that Ishmael would grow up to be a respected leader; he was bright, intelligent, friendly and most people appreciated his sense of humor.
Ishmael's qualities were also noticed by the teachers in the village. The village was fortunate to have a school facility as part of the country's literacy program and Ishmael excelled. He could read and write fluently in the national language, a holdover from colonial times. He figured out how to write his tribal language in the alphabet of the national language, something that had never been done before. Ishmael had begun a project to write down the oral history of his people and was enlisting the help of others, particularly the elders to tell him as much as they could. Ishmael tried to enlist his teachers into the oral history project, but they declined, saying they were already too busy just educating the people in the village.
The teachers recommended Ishmael to the national university in the capital. University officials were impressed and sent for Ishmael to be interviewed. It wa his first trip outside of the homeland of his people. Ishmael did not particularly care for the noise and crowds of the capital city, he found it hard to sleep inside a dormitory and he missed the people at home even though he was gone only about a week. When Ibrahim was in the capital he went to a party given by the association of people from his tribe. He was hoping to find some relatives. The people in the association were friendly enough, but Ishmael did not feel a part of things since he knew no one there.
The people at the university were so impressed with Ishmael, they offered him a full scholarship. People in the village were very proud of Ishmael.
There was a girl in a nearby village that Ishmael loved very much. Her name was Sara and she was a cousin, a daughter of the sister of his uncle's second wife. Ishmael and Sara had known each other since they were children; tribal members from different villages often got together for such things as harvest celebrations, wedding celebrations and other life-cycle events. Sara's father approved and all Ishmael had to do was to raise the money for a dowry to pay to Sara's father so they could marry. Ishmael understood that if he went to the university, it would be several years before he could raise a dowry. Under the tradition of his people, Sara's father was not committed to give her to Ishmael until he raised and paid the dowry.
Ishmael was worried about what would happen to the oral history project if he went to the university for a few years. There was no one else to do it, but everyone thought it was a valuable thing to be doing. Although the oral tradition continued, the elders were aging and Ishmael thought the elders told the best stories.
Ibrahim encouraged Ishmael to go to the university. If Ishmael did, he would be the first one from the village to get a college education. Ibrahim believed Ishmael could do much to help him in tribal affairs if he were educated, particularly with the pooled economic units. Ibrahim also believed that Ishmael could be an inspiration to the other young people of the village demonstrating the possibility of getting an education and its value.
Please identify what Ishmael's interests are and frame them as issues, remembering that issues grow out of underlying interests and issues provide a method to articulate the interests. Identify the issues and interests separately and justify your answers.
