Case Scenario

You are working with Betty who lives in a supported environment. Your shift starts at 11.00hrs. The individual plan indicated the first activity you are to complete with Betty is to support her with toileting and organise her lunch. When you go to Betty's room, she is not sitting in her chair as usual waiting for you. You notice a chair has been pushed up against the bathroom door. You can hear Betty's voice crying "Help me, help me." You quickly remove the chair and open the bathroom door to see Betty curled up in the corner."

In a teary voice Betty says, "I have been locked here all morning. That bad support worker always locks me in here when she is making my bed. It's because she doesn't want me to help her. She says I make her job harder, and it takes longer to do. So - to stop me from helping her she pushes me in here and pushes that heavy chair up against the door. It happens whenever she is on duty. She has always let me out, but today her phone rang, and I heard her say, "Oh no" and she ran out the door and left me in here. That was a long time ago. I am glad you're here. Please help me get out." Betty then cried uncontrollably.
