Read the text of George W. Bush's September 20, 2001 speech," Freedom at War with Fear", delivered to the Joint Session of Congress shortly after the 9/11 attacks. After reading the text, write an analysis based on your understanding of the speech as it relates to Rhetorical Theory.

2. Locate three places where Bush crafts an emotional (pathos) appeal. How do his words appeal to the public's emotions? The international community? 3. 4. What metaphors does he use? (identify 2 examples) Does he repeat key terms, ideas or themes?

5. Considering the canon of invention, how would you say Bush constructs the enemy? How does he construct the U.S.? The international community?

6. Summarize your reaction to the speech.
