You are a social worker in a psychiatric hospital in a suburban area. You are working with Trevor, a 21-year old Hispanic-American male who was brought into the hospital by his mother and grandmother after Trevor was found jumping off of the roof of their home into the pool. They noted other erratic, manic, concerning behaviors. He hadn't been to work in two days. Trevor has a reported history of depression, but this is his first hospitalization. After he is stabilized with medication, a team of medical professionals, a psychologist and you - the social worker - agree on a diagnosis of Bipolar I Disorder, current episode manic, moderate severity. He spends 72 hours in the hospital and begins to feel more like himself. He is able to talk about his manic episode and expresses some fear around the new diagnosis of bipolar disorder. As you help plan for Trevor's discharge back home with his mother and grandmother, consider what aspects should be included in the discharge plan.
