Jermain Case Study
Jermain is a 17-year-old Jamaican youth who resides in Toronto's west end with his two parents and younger sister who is 13 years old. Jermain's relationship with his family is very positive. The whole family takes summer camping trips together. Jermain, his parents and his younger sister often spend time together doing different activities and engage in many cultural events within the community. Jermain's family take pride in their cultural history and is a source of inspiration for Jermain's art. Jermain is currently enrolled in high school and has an interest in visual and digital arts and plans to go to college to become a digital arts designer. Jermain also has a part time job at a local fast-food restaurant. Over the last two years Jermain has been experimenting with a variety of different substances including cannabis, alcohol, crack-cocaine and different opioids.
Within the last six months, Jermain's use of crack-cocaine and opioids has significantly increased, and he is now using these substances 4-5 times a week. Recently, Jermain was caught by his parents having and using both of these substances within the family's home. Jermain's behaviour while under the influence of these substances can vary. Some days Jermain appears to be in a good mood, other days he is extremely tired and does not leave his room all day. The days when Jermain does leave his room, he is very aggressive towards his family including his younger sister.
Within the last two weeks, Jermain was fired from his part-time job for not showing up for several of his morning shifts. Jermain's parents also received a call from his high school indicating that he has been missing several classes and his grades are beginning to decline. Jermain has also stopped attending cultural and community events with his family and friends. Jermain has been caught several times stealing money from his parents' wallets. One night Jermain came home late, very intoxicated, and became extremely aggressive with his parents when they confronted him about his drug use. Fearing for their safety and the safety of Jermain's younger sister, Jermain's parents told him not to come home when he was under the influence of these substances. This has resulted in Jermain spending some of his nights in local shelters or wandering the streets while intoxicated. Jermain has some run ins with the police, but has not been arrested as of yet. Jermain has also begun to panhandle on street corners to get money to buy drugs.
