Assessment Task 1 -

CASE STUDY - Scenario

In this case study you are the trainer and assessor for the unit SITHCCC003 Prepare and present sandwiches leading to the full qualification of SIT20416 Certificate II in Kitchen Operations.

You are required to use tools such as trigger words and other resources to determine LLN requirements for SITHCCC003 Prepare and present sandwiches in both a training and workplace performance setting.

Instructions:

a) Go to training.gov.au and locate the unit of competency: SITHCCC003 Prepare and present sandwiches.

b) Using a web browser search and locate "ASQA Foundation Skills trigger words"

c) Use the trigger words to identify core skills activities in the unit of competency SITHCCC003 Prepare and present sandwiches (look at the whole unit of competency, including Foundation Skills).

d) Fill in the table below with the list of activities a learner will be required to undertake in the training environment and in the workplace environment.

e) Using the above Table, complete Spiky Chart 1A (below) for the unit SITHCCC003 Prepare and present sandwiches - shade the squares according to the ACSF levels provided for the training environment.

CASE STUDY - Scenario

Continuing from Assessment Task 1 - you are the Trainer/Assessor for the unit SITHCCC003 Prepare and present sandwiches.

You are presented with two learners who will be attending your training program.

1. Todd Franklin, and

2. Jessica Smith

You are required to analyse the ACSF Core skills for these two leaners:

Learner 1: Todd Franklin

Todd Franklin has recently left Year 10 because he wanted to do an apprenticeship to become a Chef as he loves cooking with his mum. Todd found it difficult to find an apprenticeship position after leaving school. He needs to find a job elsewhere until something comes along.

Todd's mum noticed there were a few position vacant signs at her local shops in the food court area and brought them to his attention. Todd approached a few of these places, however, didn't seem to have much success in gaining an interview. Todd's mum decided it might be a good idea for Todd to enroll in to a course that might assist him with learning what he would need to get a job.

In the process of enrolment, Todd was required to complete an LLN quiz to assist his trainer (you) with determining any LLN learning needs. Upon completing the LLN quiz, it was identified that Todd may require some additional training strategies for him to achieve a desirable outcome with his learning.

Please refer to Chart 2A for Todd's LLN results.

An LLN specialist has also provided you with the following information on how to work with Todd.

The learner:

  • Works well in a team when they have support from a mentor
  • Gets on well with peers and communicates easily with them in an informal way
  • Reads simple texts only e.g. safety signs
  • Prefers not to write detailed responses

Learner 2: Jessica Smith

Jessica Smith has been out of the workforce for a number of years while she had been caring for her two children until they reached High School age. Now that her two children are in High School, Jessica felt that she would like to find a part-time job during schooling hours.

Jessica sought some help through a local job agency to find out what she would need to do in order to find a job she would enjoy. Jessica loves to talk to people and felt that customer service would be a good pathway for her.

A local carvery had advertised online a part-time position that would be perfect for her and after updating her resume, writing a short cover letter detailing her work history, skills and attributes, she applied for the job and was successful at her interview.

Not long after she started in her new job, the owner realised that Jessica was great with his regular customers as well as efficient with taking and processing food orders. The owner decided that it would benefit Jessica to undertake some additional training to ensure she understood safe food handling practices within a commercial environment. The owner has enrolled Jessica to attend a local hospitality training facility to ensure she is trained in all of the aspects of the job that she may encounter.

Upon arriving at the course, Jessica and the others in the group were given a short LLN quiz. As well as the quiz, Jessica was invited to have a short one on one discussion with the trainer in order for the trainer to identify whether there may be some LLN requirements for Jessica.

Chart 2A below indicates the identified LLN Levels of the Training environment (for the unit SITHCCC003 Prepare and present sandwiches) and Todd's assessed ACSF level of performance based on his results of:

  • Learning - 2
  • Reading - 1
  • Writing - 2
  • Oral Communication - 3
  • Numeracy - 1

a) Analyse the Spiky Profile Chart 2A above and identify Todd's LLN skills gaps in the table below.

b) Shade Chart 2B to indicate the benchmark ACSF levels for SITHCCC003 Prepare and present sandwiches in a training environment as provided in Assessment Task 1 (Hint: They are the same levels that are shaded in Chart 2A).

c) Download Jessica's LLN documents as provided on the online portal (V3.0 Jessica Smith LLN Documents).

d) Analyse Jessica's LLN assessments to determine her ACSF levels (refer to the ACSF document).

e) Place an 'X' in Chart 2B below for each of the ACSF levels you have identified for Jessica.

f) Analyse the above Spiky Profile for Jessica Smith (Chart 2B). Identify any LLN skills gaps below.

g) Based on the analysis displayed in Chart 2A, use the below table to outline an LLN plan to accommodate Todd Franklin's LLN skill gaps.

Hint: remember that if you have identified a gap of two or more in any of the Core Skills an LLN specialist maybe be required. Also include other factors such as your own capabilities as a Trainer/Assessor, size of the learner cohort, availability of resources, length of the course, etc. Hint: Consider some of the adult learning concepts, principles and theories such as VARK and Malcolm Knowles Adult Learning Principles and how these will be incorporated into your training approach.
