Question: Objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) are used routinely in the education of some healthcare disciplines (e.g., physicians, nurses) and infrequently in the education of others (e.g., dietitians). Further, each healthcare discipline approaches the stations within an OSCE differently. For some disciplines, standardized patients are heavily utilized for OSCEs. For other disciplines, complex case studies are utilized at the various stations.
After delving into the literature to investigate the use of OSCEs in your respective discipline and others, you are to conceptualize an OSCE to assess the clinical reasoning skills of your students, interns, and/or residents (current or future). Specifications related to the OSCE follow:
Include a minimum of three (3) stations in the OSCE.
Provide instructions as to procedures for OSCE administration.
Identify time allocated to each station.
Provide a detailed description of what assessment is to occur at each station. Include any protocols, scripts, case studies, etc. that would serve as the basis of assessment to occur at each station.
Include the grading criteria (e.g., checklist) for each station.
Identify any necessary materials to be provided at each station.
Provide enough detail in your submission that any healthcare professional in your discipline could pick it up and know exactly how to administer the OSCE to his/her students, interns, and/or residents. Recent references and in-text- citation
