Poetry and Jazz

Directions:

In this lesson, you've spent a great deal of time reading and studying poetry of Tennessee  Williams and the Jazz Age poets. For your assignment, identify at least seven literary devices that were used in the poetry you read.  For each device, you need to do the following:

1. Identify the type of device that is used
2. Write the excerpt from the poem
3. Explain how the particular literary device enhances the meaning of the poem

Be sure to use a variety of devices including personification, metaphor, simile, rhythm, imagery, and dialect.  Also, do NOT use any of the items that were identified for you in any explanations or instructions.

Guidelines:

Your should:

• Be organized according to your preference (chart, list, etc.)
• Include excerpts from the poems including the title and name of the author
• List at least seven literary devices including personification, metaphor, simile, rhythm, imagery and dialect used in the excerpts (do NOT use any of the items that were identified for you in any explanations or instructions)
• Analyze how these literary devices enhance the meaning of the poem
• Follow the correct conventions of grammar, spelling and punctuation
