1. Choose a text you are currently, or have recently been required to read in a different course. Write a 3-4 page response in which you answer the following questions:
Section 1: Identify the text by stating the title and author, as well as what type of text the piece is (literary, thesis structure, problem-solution, fact-report / research, argumentative, etc.). Be sure to also explain how you know the text fits into the category you selected. (1/2 - 1 page)
Section 2: Provide a complete summary of the text, being sure to include the main idea/s (what about the subject the writer is trying to communicate). If the piece if argumentative, explain the position of the writer - what is his/her argument? (1 -2 pages)
Section 3: Look at specific wording (diction) in order to determine the author's tone and perspective on the subject. Describe the tone of the text by providing specific words from the text that suggest the tone and perspective you have determined. (1/2 - 1 page)
Section 4: Using close reading strategies, find at least 1 quote that you feel provides the best understanding of what the text is trying to communicate to its reader. Present the quote, as well as your understanding of what the quote is saying. (1/2 - 1 page)
