Foundations of Youth and Family Ministry
Contemporary Youth Interview
Assessment Description
This assignment utilizes information gathered through your required supervised ministry experience. All supervised ministry hours should be recorded within the Lopes Activity Tracker on your student portal.
For this you will interview a local youth pastor or a volunteer in your community who serves in a local youth ministry. The goal of this interview is to discover the various types/categories of students these leaders work with, the challenges these students face, and how the youth pastors/leaders seek to minister to these various types of students.
Part One: Interview
Use the following questions to guide your interview:
Describe, in general terms, three types/categories of students you are currently working with in your ministry. Include age range as well. (All students are unique, but there typically exist groups within each ministry: e.g., athletes, students from a troubled home life/background, loners, inner city, homeschooled.)
- What is the greatest challenge each of these groups faces? Why do you think they face this challenge?
- What has been your biggest challenge, as a youth pastor/leader, as you seek to minister to each of these groups? Why do you think this has been a challenge?
- How have you responded to this challenge with each group, and what strategies have you employed to help you better minister to each of these groups?
Part Two: Written Reflection
Based on the information gathered in the interview; describe in this paper that should include the following information:
- Information about the person interviewed (name, position, years in position), summary of information gathered during interview, and insights for future application.
- Identify the stage of adolescence and thorough descriptive markers for each type/category of student. Use Osmer's four core tasks of practical theological interpretation on Pg.178 (Adoptive Youth Ministry: Integrating Emerging Generations into the Family of Faith), to evaluate the person of interest: (a) Descriptive-Empirical Task, (b) Interpretive Task, (c) Normative Task, and (d) Pragmatic Task.
- Conclude your reflection with a plan detailing how you would minister to these types/categories of students in the future.
In addition to the references found in the Class Resources, you should also reference the Bible and at least two other scholarly sources.
