Assignment:
Your local municipality has identified a piece of land (approximately 1,5 hectares), adjacent to the local river/wetland (you identified for assignment 05). On this piece of the land, a developer envisages developing a fully functional, self-sufficient, smart edutainment center.
The aim of the edutainment center is to develop the local area and thus increase revenue (hopefully making the area attractive to more investors) as well as to provide a safe space for locals to enjoy their neighborhood. The identified area has an abandoned church building (the first church to have been built in the area in 1894), which has now become a "nuisance" in the area (you can decide on what nuisance the building represents in your local community).
The proposed edutainment center will be built over the river/wetland (so that approximately 500 square meters are within the boundary of the center. To further build on the educational part of the entertainment, the center will create a "natural" aquarium in the form of a lake (a wall will be built so as to create a manmade lake), and popular angling fish species will be introduced, while making sure that the endemic bull frog still strives in the area.
Furthermore, to ensure the success of the edutainment center, solar panels will be included in the development of the center and water stored in the lake will be distributed throughout the center to ensure that the center is fully functional, self-sufficient and "off the grid".
Question 1. Identify the potential impact of the "dam", as well as the impact of the introduction of popular angling fish species on the ecosystem services provided by your local freshwater resource.
Question 2
Conduct a public participation meeting (this can be done with friends and family) to inform the local community about the proposed project.
- Create a public participation notice informing the local community about the proposed project (in addition to the notice in English, another copy (in the local language should also be made available).
- Provide a report detailing the views of the community regarding the proposed project.
- Does the community support the initiative, or would they rather have something else?
