Please read the following case scenarios and identify the possible risk factors in each one. How would you work with each person to minimise the risk?
Case Scenario 1:
Mike is a man in his late twenties who has a history of alcohol misuse and paranoid schizophrenia. He frequently experiences persecutory thoughts that people are, "out to kill him". He has been prescribed antipsychotic medication, but is erratic in taking it. When he drinks heavily, the persecutory ideas increase and he is more likely to misinterpret other people's behaviour and lash out. Mike lives with his parents and younger siblings, who are not accepting of his disorder. His social life revolves around the local pub.
Case Scenario 2:
Emma is a 30 year-old single parent of two children, aged six and four. She has been referred to your agency for support in coping with the children. Her partner left her two years ago and she has little support from family and friends. During the intake interview, she tells you she suffers from severe depression and has had several hospitalisations since she was 18. She says that she hates taking antidepressant medication because it's a 'chemical' and prefers to use cannabis instead. She tells you she is currently becoming depressed again and thinks that she and the children would be 'better off somewhere else'.
