MANOVA

Introduction

Building on the work of Karl Pearson, who derived the chi-square distribution in 1900, and of "Student" who derived the t distribution in 1908, Fisher in 1923 introduced the analysis of variance (ANOVA) as a useful approach to studying population differences using a single dependent variable. The multivariate generalization of ANOVA - multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) - for studying population differences on multiple dependent variables soon followed.

You will use multivariate analysis of variance procedures for this MANOVA assignment.

Specific course competencies assessed by this assignment:

Apply univariate and multivariate analysis of variance and covariance using SPSS to analyze research data.

Apply the APA style in writing the results section of a research report

Task

Complete the tasks listed in the evaluation checklist using the community dataset.

Process

1. Download the SPSS community dataset.

2. Using the community dataset, answer the following research question: Are mean differences in the pattern of feelings of spirit, trust, interaction and learning by type course (traditional, distance) larger than expected by chance? In order to respond to this research question, complete the tasks identified in the evaluation checklist below.

Organize your response around each of the tasks listed in the evaluation checklist (i.e., each checklist task should be a separate heading in your document). Regardless of the results of your evaluation of assumptions, proceed with a MANOVA using the full, unaltered dataset provided.

Evaluation

Tasks

1. Provide informationally adequate descriptive statistics.

2. Identify the MANOVA hypothesis(es) in null form.

3. Describe the results of your evaluation of the assumption of homogeneity of variances and homogeneity of covariance matrices. Identify how you evaluated this assumption.

4. Describe the results of your evaluation of the assumption of multivariate normality. Identify how you evaluated this assumption.

5. Describe the results of your evaluation of the assumption of the absence of extreme outliers. Identify how you evaluated this assumption.

6. Test your MANOVA null hypothesis(es). Provide the results of all tests.

7. Identify the effect size for all significant effects. Identify the observed power for all non-significant effects. Interpret and evaluate these statistics.

8. Write a parsimonious results section that draws from the information you provided in response to the tasks above and that conforms to APA style. Include APA style table(s) and figure(s), as appropriate.

Conclusion

In this assignment you applied multivariate analysis of variance procedures. You will encounter these procedures in many research articles. Additionally, you are very likely to use them in any research you conduct. Make sure you learn these procedures.
