COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:

1. Compare and contrast the content and contributions of the major schools of management theory in the twentieth century.

2. Explain the role of the modern supervisor in relation to upper management, unions and governmental regulations.

3. Evaluate the various communication techniques (phone, fax, e-mail, mail, face to face, etc.) used in business organizations and when, where and why they are appropriate.

4. Identify the major decision making techniques models and compare and contrast their formats.

5. Analyze and select appropriate strategies for resolving conflict among employees.

6. Describe the major forms of business organization and how the structure affects employee behavior and morale.

7. Explain the causes for the need for "change management" and how the dynamics affect productivity.

8. Identify and evaluate the fundamentals of the control process.

Assignment: Compare and Contrast (CC) Paper

BMT 1550: The Elements of Supervision course- summary project is a Comparison Paper.

Description: You are required to contrast two managers with whom you are acquainted. (These can be people with whom you have worked or they may be managers you know from other experiences.) You are to choose one manager who you feel is successful and another who you feel is not. You are then to compare and contrast the managers. The paper should include the following information regarding/components:

The Compare and Contrast Paper has the following steps:

1. Contrast the management skills against the management theory in the twentieth century

2. Identify the level of management positions held (hierarchy)

3. Identify the role of the managers and contrast against the role of the modern upper management supervisor

4. Identify the managers' communication methods and the effectiveness of each.

5. Identify their management styles and how each of these styles is evidenced

6. Identify the managers' decision making techniques and compare and contrast their formats

7. Identify their strategies for resolving conflict among employees

8. Recommend a specific form of business organization (for the managers) and explain how the structure might affect employee behavior and morale

Recommend reasons for "change management" and the "control process"

Bibliography: For documentation of all sources, including internet, use APA format.

Additional information: Do not want use the actual names of the managers. Please choose a pseudonym for each manager to use in this assignment. Also, don't use the name of the business, but rather you should refer to the type of business (i.e. fast food restaurant, manufacturing facility, hair salon).

The paper should be a professional paper/format, 8 pages in length not counting cover page and bibliography, 12 font, and be doubled-spaced.

Remember, this project is worth 25% of your total grade and will be evaluated on the quality and thoroughness. It will be graded on the professionalism of the presentation.
