Problem
When you are asked to 'explain' a concept, ensure that you describe the concept in more detail (may include a definition of the concept) and identify how it relates to the overall topic at hand. Just identifying or listing multiple items is not enough!
I. Realism vs. Liberalism: Identify and explain the main argument of the realist perspective. Identity and explain the 'chain' or 'process' from international anarchy to international conflict. When writing your essay, make sure that you identify and explain each part of the chain and how we get from one part to another - that is, identify and explain how the chain works. Then, identify and explain how Liberalism seeks to 'short-circuit' this process.
II. Levels of Analysis: Identify and explain the three levels of analysis in three separate paragraphs (one for each level). In each paragraph, identify and explain what it is, as well as some of the key concepts, themes, and arguments of that level. Then, identify and explain at least one concrete example of that 'level' in action.
III. Counterfactual Analysis: This essay will have two parts to it. In the first part, identify and explain the factors that make up a 'good' counterfactual. In the second part, apply counterfactual reasoning to a historical event that you know. How and why could that event have turned out differently? What would have to change for it to be different? How would the world look different under these circumstances?
