Question: The healthcare field has a multitude of terminology sets, code sets and classification systems that are used in the United States and across the world. To facilitate projects that involve a variety of terminology sets, code sets and/or classification systems, a complex process called 'mapping' is completed. This problem is often encountered during Health Information Exchange (HIE) where one system may have a different way of identifying a test or measurement than another but the two systems need to communicate to facilitate an accurate, comprehensive, dependable HIE. Common examples of terminology sets, code sets and classification systems include but are not limited to:

• HIPAA Code Set (Per the Department of Health and Human Services -DHHS)

• ICD-10-CM Coding (Per the World Health Organization - WHO)

• LOINC (Per Regenstrief Institute, a US nonprofit medical research organization)

• CPT Coding (Per the American Medical Association)

• SNOWMED (Per College of American Pathologists but now maintained by The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization)

Map from LOINC to CPT in CDM use case

Scenario B: You are the HIM Director of a 500 bed community hospital which is converting the chargemaster program used for laboratory billing from service codes for laboratory tests to LOINC (Logical Object Identifiers Names and Codes) codes.

A staff member has expressed concern that the mapping program is not accurate creating a data integrity problem in charging for laboratory services.

Assignment B: In the table below, review and identify the line numbers where the mapping is not exact. Assume that the charge column has only correct data. Note: You should find 3 errors in this group - consider the source as "test performed" with targets to LOINC and CPT. (To facilitate this assignment, corresponding resource pages from both LOINC and CPT are copied at the end of this assignment. See page 8. Please use it for completion of this assignment.)
